Ejournal week 8
It was reaffirming to see the results of the
e-learning survey for my fellow staff. It confirms the feelings myself and my
team are experiencing. We are feeling that we need further training to inform
us of what we should be using and how. Apps etc change so rapidly that it is
hard to keep up and most of them are new to use. We want to skill up on the use
of these for deep learning and inquiry but have not been given any support to
do so. This frustration would be evident in our responses as a school -in some way we feel like we are fighting a
battle to keep up with innovations when the learning to do so is not a
priority. We are all time poor in this respect.
In contrast, our hearts are in the right place and we
wish to take on 21c learning into all areas of teaching and learning which is
why we are high in New Pedagogies and engage in it to some extent ourselves.
I am really starting to feel the value of this course
and see that I can be a leader- not just the traditional leading. I feel that
maybe in the last few years I have lead and more so as I have gained confidence
and experience and I am now getting insights into my strengths and that being a
leader doesn’t mean aiming for a higher pay packet… I’m back on top of the
workload now and finding many readings are re-affirming of my thoughts for my
ARP.
Reading 8 Forces for Leaders Of Change was a powerful
experience. Her are some of my thoughts :
·
Mirrors thinking I have had
·
Building capacity while learning
while doing integrate it into teaching and learning at the same time training
and PL is not enough for us at the moment.
·
I am in the middle of this trying
to effect change by pushing leadership to build these conditions while leading
from the pack but further ahead in learning
·
Culture of evaluation –as I am
conducting course but would like to evaluate the outcomes later on effect on
parents at some later point.
·
Helen (my Principal) is trying to
develop leadership from within but I am trying to develop my leadership from
within which in time will spread to other in my team if I move on. I am
modelling leadership.
·
Changing context of parents but
also changing context of leadership in the school
·
MENTIONS FIRST YEAR TEACHERS!!!!
Here is my mission.
A significant issue for me this week has been
balancing the use of technology in my home. My son is 13 and my daughter 10.
Being digital natives, tools such as Ipads are part of life but they can easily
take over. The kids can be difficult to shift if they are in sight at all. Getting
tasks done around the house. It has been a fine balance appreciating that these
tools do much but are such a distraction. We have had to set firm boundaries
and remind them that they have to be connected to the real world too. At times
I have had to to point out to my husband that the Ipads went on the year 7 camp
for a good reason- taking photos. I got that , he needed to be reminded about
that. It was a positive move by the high school to let the m come along but to
ensure they were used responsibly. I was reassured that the teachers collected
them at night. I felt as though I was mediating between generation x and gen Z!
It sounds like you're coming to a point of clarity Bec, which is really good - both about your own leadership but also how the learnings in this course can be applied to your own contexts.
ReplyDeleteI have similar issues at home with a 17 and 13 year old - there are some 'no go' zones for their laptops, iPads and smartphones (like dinner and also immediately upon picking them up fro somewhere) and some fencing round how much Skype can happen, and how this needs to be asked for rather than just done. It's about balance isn't it? They play footy, basketball and volleyball, take the dogs for a walk, sit down and talk about their day over dinner...then there's space for connection online.
It's about managing it and balance.
Feeling like I'm juggling ball while on that tightrope Nikki but equilibrium seems generally present…..We are careful to have rules too like no devices after 8pm, not before school, not at meals. Will keep being vigilant though….
DeleteI'm just picking up on a really small part of your post but it might help you find your way a little with the new iPads.
ReplyDeleteThe Apps are SOOOoooo hard to keep up with, then you've got the issue of keeping the iPads up to date with apps, which, no matter how much tech support you have always seems to end up falling to teachers. The kids tend to get over using them as quick as they are developed and installed as well, unless they are REALLY useful.
We had a problem with saving shared docs so we got dropbox, the kids were having trouble typing in long web addresses so we uploaded Qrafter QR code reader,
My point is the most useful apps we have are the ones that have got us out of a squeeze or solved a problem where we couldn't do something we really wanted to.
There are very few apps that we have purchased for a specific student learning needs that have stood the test of time.
The microsoft style suite - Pages, Keynote, Numbers are really useful and important skills to develop. iMovie, the camera and Safari are the apps that get the most run in our school.
A category of Apps that do get used regularly are things that make the art of teaching easier whether it be documenting learning (Idoceo, SeeSaw, Evernote) or flipping the learning (Verso) documentation and efficiency for teaching better
When we were first using our iPads we had "App of the week" responsibilities but found the task of finding something that was going to be perfect for fitting the bill was difficult.
Once we got past this we started using the apps that were already on the iPads in creative and exciting ways.
Cloud based internet services where students get to make cool things on the internet are really getting a great run in classrooms so far this year.
ISSUU - Build brilliant looking magazines that look like real magazines - Rich in English, Collaboration, Literacy
Twitter - Is being used by class teachers to promote class radio station recorded on the voice recorder and posted to "Soundcloud"
EDublogs - being used as a class newspaper site similar to online news pares like the age
Instagram used to communicate with families globally about various topics
Skype - Connecting classroom between CPS and China to work on collaborative music projects.
The frenzied search for apps to solve all of our teaching woes has died down and people are getting creative with what they already have got.
This might help focus your teams attention on what they get "out of the box" with the iPads. They are powerful little machines and hold enormous opportunities for learning to occur. Cheaper too...
I'm happy to talk about this anytime Bec and I'd have a couple of teams that would be willing to give you a hand too. When you've got a spare moment ;-)
Thanks Matt. We have chosen pretty carefully and chosen ones that are more for creative. recording purposes , not skill and drill but I will definitely keep an eye out for kids getting bored. We have also got onto a pilot program for an site called DB Primary. it works like Compass. Will keep you posted on how it goes.
ReplyDeleteSounds good Bec, I'd be interested in hear how the trial goes.
